Aquatic Therapy
Omni Physical & Aquatic Therapy Center provides Aquatic Therapy Rehabilitation for individuals recovering from multiple types of injuries or conditions ranging from:
Non-surgical orthopedic conditions
Rehabilitation after a motor vehicle accident
Work-related injury rehabilitation
Sports injury rehabilitation
Pre & Post orthopedic surgery rehabilitation
Aquatic Therapy is performed in warm water. It is a beneficial form of therapy using the physical properties of water to assist in healing and exercise performance. One key benefit of aquatic therapy is the buoyancy provided by water.
After an injury or surgery, a patient's sensitivity to pain can be greatly increased, limiting movement and weight bearing capacity on land. In water, the effects of gravity are reduced, allowing for increased movement activities.
While submerged in water, buoyancy assists in supporting a patient’s weight. Decreasing the stress borne by a patient's joints allows for greater ease in movement and performance of exercises. The properties of water, especially increased buoyancy, permit patients to exercise in a relatively low impact environment resulting in an enhanced healing process.
Therapeutic programs are designed for each patient to improve function, flexibility, strength, balance, and coordination. The programs also improve aerobic capacity/endurance, gait, locomotion, body mechanics and postural stabilization. The result of these programs is pain reduction with improved mobility.
Benefits of Aquatic Physical Therapy include:
Muscle relaxation and increased peripheral circulation through the use of warm water
Decreased pain sensitivity as a result of the warm water and increased buoyancy
Through the reduction of gravitational forces and increased buoyancy in the pool, patients are able to stand with less strain and find it easier to begin range of motion, strengthening, stretching and gait training exercises
Water provides natural resistance for strength training
Body awareness, balance, and trunk stability are stimulated by warm water
Does Aquatic Therapy Benefit All Patients?
While Aquatic Therapy is one of the most impactful and effective methods for rehabilitation, it is not for everyone and may not be appropriate for all patients. If you are considering or interested in Aquatic Therapy, please consult with your physician and/or physical therapist
